Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at shea@pawsitivedogtrainingschoolc.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

When dropping off your pup the only thing you need to bring is their food! Bedding, dishes, toys, and treats will be provided by Pawsitive Dog Training School.

No — your dog will not think you abandoned them during their Board and Train program. While it’s normal for dogs to experience a brief adjustment period when first separated from their family, they quickly adapt to their new routine in a structured training environment.

At our 9-acre dog training facility, your pup is cared for daily by professional trainers who ensure they feel safe, engaged, and supported. The immersive nature of a board and train program actually helps reduce separation anxiety by giving your dog clear structure, consistent training, and positive experiences.

When it’s time to reunite, your dog will be excited to see you — and thanks to the skills learned during training, your bond will grow even stronger. Many owners find that their dogs come home more confident, obedient, and happier after their stay.

Yes. We require all dogs to be fully vaccinated, and on a flea and tick preventative. Proof of vaccination is required for all classes and board and train bookings.

We require the following Vaccines for all dogs:

  • Rabies
  • DHPP
  • Leptospira
  • Bordetella
  • Negative Fecal sample within two weeks of their stay.

Shea & Jess are balanced dog trainers, which means he uses all four quadrants of operant conditioning to create clear communication and effective results for both dogs and their owners. Unlike trainers who rely exclusively on one method, a balanced approach allows Shea to adapt training techniques to each dog’s personality, learning style, and specific behavioral needs.

What Does Balanced Training Mean?

Balanced training combines:

  • Positive reinforcement (rewarding desired behaviors)

  • Negative reinforcement (removing pressure when the dog responds correctly)

  • Positive punishment (adding a consequence to discourage unwanted behavior)

  • Negative punishment (withholding a reward when the desired behavior isn’t shown)

By using all four tools of operant conditioning, Shea provides dogs with clear structure, consistency, and fairness—leading to reliable obedience and improved behavior both at home and in public.

Recommended Reading:

To gain a deeper understanding of our training philosophy, he recommends the book How Dogs Learn by Dr. Mary R. Burch and Dr. Jon S. Bailey, which explains the science behind dog learning theory and operant conditioning in training.

All dogs enrolled in our Board & Train programs receive a premium E-Collar Technologies training collar to continue their progress at home. The model most often used by Shea is the Mini Educator, one of the most trusted and versatile remote training collars available today.

Features of the Mini Educator E-Collar:

  • Three communication options: Tone, Vibrate, and Stimulation

  • Designed for clear and consistent communication with your dog

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Our Board and Train

Please reach us at shea@pawsitivedogtrainingschoolc.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A board and train program is a full-immersion training experience where your dog stays at our 9-acre professional training facility for 2, 4, or 6 weeks. During their stay, your dog works daily with our trainers to learn obedience commands, behavior skills, and advanced training techniques, while you receive private lessons to continue progress at home.

We offer three structured board and train options:

  • Two-Week Program (16 days): Focuses on the foundations of obedience.

  • Four-Week Program (31 days): Expands into advanced obedience and off-leash training.

  • Six-Week Program: Designed for dogs preparing for high-level competition or those with severe behavioral issues.

All of our board and train programs cover the core obedience commands:

  • Sit

  • Sit-Stay

  • Down

  • Down-Stay

  • Bed (Place)

  • Heel / Loose Leash Walking

  • Leave It

  • Kennel Up

  • Quiet

The four-week and six-week programs also include advanced obedience skills, off-leash training, and personalized plans based on your goals.

The two-week board and train is ideal for puppies, young dogs, or any dog needing to establish strong obedience foundations. It’s a great starting point for well-mannered behavior both at home and in public.

The four-week board and train is perfect for owners interested in off-leash reliability, e-collar training, or preparing for competition obedience. It provides additional lessons and advanced obedience work.

The six-week board and train is recommended for:

  • Dogs preparing for the obedience ring, rally, scent work, or agility.

  • Dogs with serious behavior problems such as aggression, reactivity, or high anxiety.

Enrollment requires a free behavioral consultation with Shea to create a personalized training plan and set clear goals.

Yes. Our six-week & four-week board and train program is specifically designed for dogs with severe behavioral challenges. Through behavior modification techniques and structured training, Shea will help your dog learn better responses and equip you with the tools to maintain progress at home.

After graduation, you’ll receive private lessons (6 lessons with the two-week program, 12 with the four-week program, and 16 with the six-week program). These sessions ensure you feel confident reinforcing your dog’s training at home. Plus, you’ll receive reduced future boarding rates for ongoing support.

Each board and train program includes a high-quality E-Collar Technologies training collar, which is yours to keep. This ensures consistency between training at our facility and at home.
